Clergue Forest Management Inc.(CFMI) was issued Sustainable Forest Licences covering the Algoma and Wawa Forests on January, 1998. These licences are issued to companies who, in exchange for harvesting rights, agree to assume responsibility for the care and ongoing maintenance of Crown forests. In 2005 the Algoma and Wawa forests were amalgamated into one forest, which is presenently known as the Algoma Forest. There is just under 1 million ha of crown land within the Algoma Forest. CFMI received the rights to this new forest under the SFL #542257, and is responsible for managing 746,644 ha of that forest.
Clergue has six partner companies that are partially dependent on timber from the Algoma Forest. These companies include: Boniferro Mill Works Inc., Domtar Inc., Levesque Plywood Limited (Columbia Forest Products), St. Marys Paper Ltd., Midway Lumber Mills Limited, and Weyerhaeuser Company Limited. These partner companies and shareholders of CFMI employ almost 1100 people in their respective mills and almost another 300 people in woodland operations.
Clergue is responsible for preparing and implementing the Forest Management Plan (FMP) for the Algoma Forest, harvesting and renewal and tending requirements, maintaining the forest inventory (FRI) and monitoring compliance of forestry operations.
