The Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) is a certification organization which has helped in the developing of a set of standards to define and encourage responsible forest management around the world. This not-for-profit organization, formed in 1993, is independent of government and industry. These 10 principals form the basis of the three dimensions (Social, Economic, Environmental) used to define responsible forest management

The certification process to validate responsible forest management is detailed and comprehensive. It involves a site visit by the certifying body as well as review of the organization's procedures and documentation.

Since 1989, Smartwood has been the recognized world leader in FSC accredited forest certification. Smartwood is a part of the Rainforest Alliance, an international conservation organization. Clergue Forest Management Inc. (CFMI) underwent the certification process in the fall of 2004 and was awarded FSC status at a public presentation on June 23, 2005. Organizations which meet the FSC's standards of responsible forest management are awarded use of the recognized FSC trademark to identify their certified forests and forest products. FSC certification also permits companies who adhere to these standards to be recognized in their communities and by their customers.
